

Principal Engineer
Job Description Overview:
This role involves defining and documenting business and functional requirements to enhance systems and business processes. It requires a hands-on approach to solution implementation, ongoing technical and business support, and contributing to training and change management initiatives.
The ideal candidate is eager to engage in a variety of tasks and applies their specialized knowledge to achieve goals. With expertise gained through education and experience, they provide guidance as a project manager or consultant. The role demands in-depth conceptual and practical knowledge in a primary discipline, with foundational knowledge of related areas. The candidate should be comfortable solving complex problems, working independently with minimal supervision, and potentially leading projects or key initiatives. They will also act as a resource for colleagues with less experience.
This position offers the opportunity for permanent employment after 6-12 months based on performance.
Location: London, UK (3 days onsite)
Duration: 12 months + (Option to go perm after)
Rate: £750 a day Inside IR35
Key Responsibilities:
• Actively participate in squad ceremonies, including work elaboration, estimation, prioritization, and implementation.
• Evaluate existing solutions and propose improvements by applying architectural best practices and guidance.
• Develop and maintain the technical and architectural debt backlog, along with a roadmap for capability enhancements.
• Align architectural direction with business priorities and practical implementation considerations.
• Operate within established guidelines and policies while maintaining flexibility to adapt as needed.
• Collaborate with other squads to integrate architectural direction into planning and drive adoption, addressing any roadblocks.
• Work closely with business and technology teams at all levels to implement solutions.
• Serve as an advisor to the Capability Owner and squad, providing technical and strategic guidance.
• Promote the adoption of engineering best practices, design patterns, and architectural principles.
• Support system maintenance and infrastructure management as needed.
Required Knowledge & Skills:
• Understanding of cloud concepts (Microsoft Azure certification AZ-900 preferred).
• Proficiency in Linux, Oracle Database, and modern software development tools.
• Strong focus on quality, security, and best practices in software engineering.
• Ability to execute large-scale, complex, and cross-functional projects.
• Strong communication skills, with confidence in engaging stakeholders at all levels.
Experience & Qualifications:
• Background in financial services is a must
• Hands-on experience with Oracle and Redhat Linux
• Experience with Java stack preferable.
• Knowledge of modern software engineering practices, including test and process automation.
• Familiarity with implementing test automation and process improvements.
• Practical experience with Linux, MS SQL Server, Oracle, and Java.
