As a Research Engineer - Responsible AI, you will be part of enhancing the quality and robustness of AI systems using synthetic approaches and will collaborate with a diverse global team of experts across Thomson Reuters business segments. About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Research Engineer to join the Responsible AI team in a new program focused on improving AI systems through the enhancement of content using synthetic data generation approaches and agentic systems to train and test generative AI models. This role requires someone who is a self-motivated problem starter with a startup mindset, capable of wearing multiple hats and thriving in a dynamic environment.
In this opportunity as a Research Engineer - Responsible AI, you will:
Innovate: Work at the cutting edge of AI at an institution with some of the richest data sources in the world. Help make the best use of this resource through data curation, generation, and evaluation to improve training data. Develop novel performance-driven data sub-selection methods using the latest training insights from business partners and subject matter experts.
Engineer and Develop: Design, develop, and optimize scalable data pipelines to support LLM training and evaluation. Ensure robust, testable development through source control and solid back-up systems for data versioning.
Collaborate: Work with a global team of subject matter experts within Thomson Reuters. Engage closely with world experts in legal, tax and accounting, and news domains to provide feedback and evaluate outputs to accelerate model training and evaluation.
About You
You’re a fit for the role of Research Engineer if your background includes:
Required Qualifications:
Relevant degree in a technical discipline
Experience with applied machine learning (e.g., few-shot learning, training NLP classifiers)
Excellent programming, debugging, and system design skills
Highly proficient in Python
Experience with web app development (Streamlit, Flask, Django)
Experience in prompt engineering for LLMs (OpenAI, Claude, Llama)
Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
Self-driven with the ability to work independently
Experience with relational and NoSQL databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Cassandra)
Experience with cloud-based data platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure: S3, BigQuery, Azure Data Lake Storage)
Comfortable in fast-paced, agile environments; able to manage uncertainty and ambiguity
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with differential privacy techniques
Experience with data visualization tools
Knowledge of data governance and privacy policies (GDPR, EU AI Act, AIDA)
Knowledge of Responsible AI frameworks and AI ethics
Ability to communicate with multiple stakeholders, including non-technical subject matter experts
Strong software/infrastructure engineering skills (e.g., contributions to open-source libraries)
Knowledge of legal, or tax and accounting domains is a plus
