Statistician
The Dissertation Coach is seeking a part-time, highly qualified statistician who can provide statistical consulting and coach doctoral students. The ideal candidate for this position is also capable and ready to help doctoral students:
design and execute methodologically sound quantitative research;
translate their thoughts and ideas into scholarly writing; and
navigate the stressors of doctoral-level writing while remaining productive and healthy.
Dissertation coaches are a special breed. They do more than review writing and provide feedback (although they do that too!). An ideal coach provides top-notch academic support, but a coach also possesses the following qualities in spades:
Compassion and empathy for students
Active listening skills
Patience for students who are working through hard emotions
Ability to help students move through social-emotional challenges and get “unstuck”
Enjoyment of teaching and connecting with students
In addition to the soft skills, an ideal statistician and dissertation coach will specifically help students:
Consider the alignment of their research design including problem, purpose, and research questions and hypotheses
Consider which research design may best suit their research agenda
Determine which statistical tests are appropriate for analyzing data and answering the proposed research questions
Use language appropriate to quantitative research
Understand academic culture and scholarly writing conventions
Understand their needs in the domain of statistics and data analysis, formulate and solve their quantitative research problems, and interpret and write technical reports of the statistical analyses
Qualifications and Core Competencies
A Master’s degree in Statistics, or Mathematics (a doctoral qualification would be considered an advantage)
Proficient in one or more of the following statistical software: IBM SPSS Statistics (required), Stata, R, SAS, MPlus
Possess sufficient generalist and specialist knowledge to undertake a wide range of statistical consultancy projects
Strong analytical skills
Prior experience as a supervisor/mentor overseeing doctoral students. 5+ years of experience is preferred.
Experience teaching quantitative research design and methodologies.
Proficient in APA style
Strong oral and written communication skills
Ability to work independently
Ability to build and maintain professional relationships with students over time
Maintain an understanding that flexibility is necessary when working with online students, and there is freedom in decision-making
Ability to work evenings and weekends as required
A dissertation coach will handle the following administrative capacities of their role which include:
Researching and preparing teaching resources
Communicating with students, through email, telephone, and Zoom meetings
Track students’ progress using a client relationship management software
